Book Title | Author | Cover | Month/Year | Comments |
| Cranford | Elizabeth Gaskell | | Dec, 2009 | |
| And Then There Were None, aka Ten Little Indians | Agatha Christie | | Nov, 2009 | |
| Where the Heart Is | Billie Letts | | Oct, 2009 | |
| Under the Tuscan Sun | Frances Mayes | | Sep, 2009 Rating: 5.0 High: 7 Low: 3 | Most of us weren't expecting the travelogue, journal type book this is. It was slow to read and easy to put down. Yet we found the descriptions interesting of parts like picking the olives and making their own oil. Mayes' wonder at the history buried just below the surface was evident and she was able to portray the lushness of the area. One member found the book lyrical, with Mayes' using her poet's voice to describe an area she loved. We all agreed that Mayes and her husband accomplished quite a feat. |
| Hawaii | James Michener | | Aug, 2009 Rating: 7.5 High: 9 Low: 5 | This epic novel spanned so much and gave us a lot to talk about. There are many different themes, such as the different cultures in later years, how the New England missionaries profoundly affected the islands, the strength of some of the women, and the environmental changes brought to the islands, especially through irrigation. Some thought Michener's writing was great, but many felt it needed some tightening up. Michener's research and story telling bring the islands to life for the reader. We were all impressed by the story of the first island settlers - we're having trouble picturing that first ocean voyage in large canoes across thousands of Pacific Ocean miles. |

| The Thorn Birds | Colleen McCullough | | Jun, 2009 Rating: 7.2 High: 9 Low: 4.5 | We discussed some of the way The Thorn Birds was perceived now versus when it was published back in the 1970's. We found the Australian background and description of that section of the Outback fascinating. The Catholic Church is a large part of this novel so we talked about the realities versus the perceptions versus the possible future of the institution. |
| Bondwoman's Narrative | Hannah Crafts | | May, 2009 Rating: 7.3 High: 9 Low: 7 | Although this is a novel, we read the long introduction by Dr. Gates and understand that it is a fictionalized version of true events as chronicled by a black slave woman in Virginia in the 1850's. |
| Wild Swans - Three Daughters of China | Jung Chang | | Apr, 2009 Rating: 7.3 High: 9 Low: 4 | |
| The Great Gatsby | F.Scott Fitzgerald | | Mar, 2009 Rating: 7.7 High: 9 Low: 4 | |
| Pride and Prejudice | Jane Austen | | Feb, 2009 Rating: 8.5 High: 10 Low: 7.5 | This book was originally named First Impressions, which certainly fits the book. We all liked it. The biggest problem we see with this book is the 200 year old language. We know that some people wouldn't get past it. There was laughter in the room as we discussed the characters, especially Mr. Collins. We also discussed the cultural differences. The Bennet women were reliant on the men for their living. Marriage was the goal of women because it is how they survived. |
| Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister | Gregory Maguire | | Jan, 2009 Rating: 5.8 High: 7 Low: 2 | This is Cinderella with a twist. |
